Bryson Roy	General	Hi, I volunteer at LASTA, where this engine (if you can even call it that in its current state) is stored. This E9 actually never was part of the IC, despite the number similarity. Originally this unit went under UP 909 until its lease to Amtrak in the early 70's when it took on the number 1414. then renumbered to 414 in 1973 when Amtrak purchased it from UP. At some point before being sold to a private collector, it was numbered to its current number. There are actually multiple pictures of this unit in its UP and early Amtrak careers. This unit has actually decayed to such a degree sitting in the LASTA yard that you can see remnants of all three of its former paint schemes. Looking closely at the door grab irons and front nose, bits of UP armor yellow are starting to bleed through. Likewise, looking closely to the left of that large cluster of rust near the bottom of the carbody on the left side of the ladder, you'll notice a diagonal slant where the rust is cut off. Although it's sad to see what was once viewed as America's most iconic series of passenger locomotives, it is remarkable to be able to see all three eras of service this locomotive went through and to also see how far along we have come in motive power since then.
